A shoutout to all my awesome friends who donated to relief efforts in Pakistan. In addition to their own personal giving, their generosity helped raise $320 for Oxfam America, which is focusing on clean water efforts, and $160 for the American Red Cross. Special mention goes to my anonymous friend for matching my donation (and to the anonymous donor who matched all of Oxfam’s donations)

It’s been a month since the flood waters have receded, and now the work of rebuilding a shattered infrastructure and caring for the the food, water, and shelter needs of ~15 million people begins. Disease is a major concern, especially with the peak malaria season approaching in October, and many people without enclosed shelters. On a positive note, it seems like at least certain parts of the flood-ravaged areas will be able to plant a vital crop of winter wheat this fall.

Too often we turn away from disasters once the news crews pull out. (raise your hands if you know how the Haiti rebuilding efforts: Hint, its not good.) I’m gonna try to keep up with what’s going on in Pakistan over the course of the next year via ReliefWeb. Help keep me honest and leave a comment asking how things are every so often!

Keep on caring.

Update 3: Just donated $150 to Oxfam which will go towards securing uncontaminated drinking water supplies for flood victims in Pakistan. (Which will then be matched by Oxfam to total $300!!) Thanks to everybody who has given so far! Remember, this drive is going until the end of Labor Day (Sept 6)!

Update 2: 10 donors! 10 more to go! Also, floodwaters crest in Pakistan, though the potential for flooding still remains.

Update 1: Donation links added!

For those of you who haven’t been following the news, there’s been a huge amount of flooding in Pakistan due to the annual monsoon rains. The worst flooding in over 80 years. Over 20 million people affected, more than the 2004 Tsunami. 5 million homeless. 1,600 dead. Years of infrastructure development washed away in an already impoverished country: 5,000 miles of road, 7,000 schools, 400 health facilities, 800,000 people inaccessible by road. 17 million acres of farmland ruined.

I’m going to take a page from Livia‘s playbook and start a donation drive. For every person who donates to an aid organization that is currently in Pakistan and leaves a comment, I will pledge to donate $10 to Oxfam International, up to $200. A friend of mine (who requested to remain anonymous) has promised to match me. AND Oxfam International will be matching any donations to Pakistan through August 31st, so your one donation could generate up to $30 additional dollars! This drive will be open through Sept 6, but comment before August 31st so that I can give $ to Oxfam before the matching funds go away!

So please, donate and comment! There is a huge need. Unlike the 2010 Haiti Earthquake, which received extensive coverage here in the US, the Pakistani floods have been more of a footnote (where are you, Anderson Cooper?) Haiti received $2.5 billion in relief aid. So far, pledges to Pakistan have totaled only around $600 million. And the largest challenges are yet to come as the floodwaters recede: clean water, sanitation, and disease prevention. Food shortages, perhaps even for years. Not to mention the hard work of rebuilding the country’s infrastructure and restoring its shattered communities.

Donate!

“A heart-wrenching day for me and for my delegation. I will never forget the destruction and sufferings I have witnessed today. In the past I have visited scenes of many natural disasters around the world, but nothing like this. The scale of this disaster is so large and there are so many people in so many places in so much need.”" ~Ban Ki Moon, UN Secretary-General

This disaster is not like an earthquake or a tsunami. In the 2005 earthquake in northern Pakistan, 80,000 people died more or less at one blow; whereas the immediate death toll from this flood is likely to be in the low thousands. The loss of property, however, is catastrophic. It is as if a neutron bomb exploded overhead, but instead of killing the people and leaving their houses intact, it piled trees upon the houses and swept away the villages and crops and animals, leaving the people alive.

For months and even years, the people of the Indus Valley will not have sufficient income for food or clothing. They will rebuild, if they can afford it, by inches. The corrupt and impoverished Pakistani government cannot possibly make these people’s lives whole again. ~Daniyal Mueenuddin

Why doesn’t the world care about Pakistanis?

The United Nations has characterized the destruction caused by the floods in Pakistan as greater than the damage from the 2004 Asian tsunami, the 2005 Pakistan earthquake, and the 2010 Haiti earthquake combined. Yet nearly three weeks since the floods began, aid is trickling in slowly and reluctantly to the United Nations, NGOs, and the Pakistani government.

After the Haiti earthquake, about 3.1 million Americans using mobile phones donated $10 each to the Red Cross, raising about $31 million. A similar campaign to raise contributions for Pakistan produced only about $10,000. The amount of funding donated per person affected by the 2004 tsunami was $1249.80, and for the 2010 Haiti earthquake, $1087.33. Even for the Pakistan earthquake of 2005, funding per affected person was $388.33. Thus far, for those affected by the 2010 floods, it is $16.36 per person.

So it’s been about a month since the last midweek plug, but I’m really excited about this one.

One of my good friends Livia (and her husband and her mom) is pledging to donate $10 $20 for every person who donates to an organization working in Haiti and leaves a comment on her blog.

blog.liviablackburne.com

Here’s how it will work.

1. Please make a donation to Haiti relief efforts. You can donate to the American Red Cross by texting “HAITI” to 90999 (A $10 donation will be taken off your phone bill). Or, make a donation via their web page* or another charity of choice.

2. Leave a comment in this post noting that you made a donation. My husband and I will donate $10 to the American Red Cross for every donation listed in the comment section between now and the end of Thursday, up to a limit of $500 dollars.

We’re just going to go by the honor system here. Please do consider making a donation. Thank you!

Livia – neuroscientist/writer by day; philanthropist by night; all-around-awesome all-the-freaking-time.

A general guideline: Mark your donations for the general fund, not the Haiti fund. High profile disasters tend to pull in more money than they need (there are still a few billion dollars unspent from the tsunami), so general fund donations give the organizations the flexibility to put your money to the best use.

Advice on giving (from various development blogs): 1, 2, 3, 4

Protests in Iran are heating up again. Coverage @ The Daily Dish

The Catalysts:

The Day of Ashura (wikipedia)

The death of reformist Grand Ayatollah Montazeri (bbc)

The Day of Ashura (عاشوراء (ʻĀshūrā’, Ashura, Ashoura, and other spellings) is on the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar and marks the climax of the Remembrance of Muharram.

It is commemorated by Shia Muslims as a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram in the year 61 AH (October 10, 680 AD). Some Sunni Muslims also have significance for that day as Moses fasted on that day to express gratitude to God for liberating the Israelites from Egypt. According to Sunni Muslim tradition, the Prophet Muhammad fasted on this day and asked other people to fast.

(wikipedia)

In Iran, where the Shiites are in the majority, the battle of Karbala and the death of Imam Hossein have taken on political significance for at least a century. This began during the Constitutional Revolution (1905-11), when gatherings to mourn the death of Imam Hossein became political as well. The clerics began preaching that the oppressors — the king and his cronies — were similar to Imam Hossein’s enemies. The commemoration of Ashura became so political during the reign of Reza Shah that he actually outlawed it during the 1930s.

This year promises to be no different. The Green Movement has vowed to use the day of Ashura — Sunday, December 28 — to stage peaceful demonstrations and showcase its strength. Given that the color green has a special meaning in Islam, and that Imam Hossein, an underdog in the Karbala battle, is considered a symbol of resistance against oppressors and absolute power, the demonstrations, if they materialize, will be hugely significant. As fate would have, the Islamic mourning ceremonies marking the 7th day of the passing of Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri will also fall on Ashura, which will likely fuel the intensity, as it will be rich in symbolism and can resonate politically throughout the country.

(PBS – Frontline)

Grand Ayatollah Montazeri, one of Shia Islam’s most respected figures and a leading critic of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, himself said in August that the turmoil following the election “could lead to the fall of the regime”.

He said Iran’s clerical leadership was a dictatorship and issued a fatwa condemning the government after the election.
